News - October 2007
Yeah, yeah... I know I'm running behind with my blurb...... We've been kinda busy.
We started packing, this house is officially listed for sale...... And we're slowly waking up to the reality that this is in fact happening. Talk about weird! This will be a long email, I have a ton of stuff to cover. So let's start with some great news.....Kurt Ozdaglar has offered to step up and be the new NSAI coordinator. For those of you who haven't met Kurt, he'll be a great replacement for Beckett and I. Plus I'm certain that many of the folks who have always been there to help me will help Kurt as well. Believe me this is a team effort. Kurt is an excellent writer and musician, I've been co-writing with him for quite awhile now - and I'm very impressed. He has his sights set much like mine "current country radio". He's level headed and business minded, a good combination for this position. I'm absolutely thrilled that Kurt has stepped up, the thought of this group dwindling away - tortured my soul. This group is far more than "Larry & Beckett" we were just the spark plugs for this ride. And we're quite honored to have been that. I still be here until November or December.....who knows with how houses are selling.....But Kurt will be phasing in, and coming up to speed on the details of what I do here. I'll also be helping from Nashville, making sure that you guys out here get to draw from the very best Nashville has to offer. I'll be able to beg, face to face! That will be different. Our next meeting will be next Sunday October 7th, from 1-4 at our house, as usual. We'll do song critiquing, and business pertaining to the change of command here. We want your input, ideas and cooperation in this dealing. I strongly encourage everyone to make the next few gatherings. Let's give Kurt some good positive energy to keep this bird flying!!
Side note and correction. The Tahoe event will not be happening in '08, due to our move. However, I'm still game - and even excited to continue it in '09. We're keeping our place up there, plus it will give me a reason to come to Tahoe. So, let's look forward to '09!!! And the Sacramento group will be the hosts again, if you'll allow Beckett and I the privilege of being part of the group for a few days.....
Our next workshop will be with Pete and Pat Luboff, Saturday November 3rd at Skip's Music in Sacramento. Here's the workshop info and their bio:
Dear Larry and Beckett,
Hi, we hope this finds you well and happy. Time is flying and before we know
it, we'll be together in Sacramento! Here's a write-up for our workshop on
November 3. Just the facts, and we'll leave you to add the times and places.
Here's the blurb:
AM Sessions: (10 to 11:15 and 11:30 to 12:45)
Blockbuster Stories: Using Hollywood Moviemakers'
Tricks For Plotting Your Song.
Learn how to use screenwriting and acting techniques to enhance the
creativity and believability of your "three-minute movies," aka your songs.
Super Song Starters: Analysis Of Intros And First Two Lines Of Your Songs
Bring in your demos. We'll play them and discuss the impact of the
first things the professional listener hears. Learn how to keep them
from turning off your tune!
PM Session
Nashville in Sacramento: The Sounding Board
Bring a song and enough copies of your lyrics for all participants. Pete
and Pat will recreate the Sounding Board workshop they lead every Monday
night in Nashville. Not a critique! A group collaborative effort to help
each other with our songs.
Pete and Pat will be available for one-on-one consultations on Sunday,
November 4. Please email pluboff@writesongs.com by October 31 to schedule
your appointment.
Is that enough? What else can we give you? Here's a short bio:
Pat & Pete Luboff have recordings by Snoop Dogg ("Trust Me," the first
single from the platinum-selling album "Top Dogg") Patti LaBelle (gold
album and the title song for "Body Language: the Musical"), Bobby Womack
(No. 2 on Billboard's Black Music chart), "Hometown, USA" from the John
Travolta movie "Experts," Michael Peterson, Miko Marks' current single
"The Son My Daddy Never Had," and more. They've been teaching songwriting
workshops together since 1979. They lead The Sounding Board songwriting
think tank in Nashville every Monday night. The Luboffs are the authors of
the Writer's Digest book "88 Songwriting Wrongs and How to Right Them"
(soon to be "101 Songwriting Wrongs!) and "12 Steps to Building Better
Songs," which they self-publish. For more information, visit
http://www.writesongs.com
So the point here is simple.....for those of you who "don't write country". These folks think and hear things outside of Nashville. This is a great sounding board for all genres! But how about country?? The Luboff's Monday night workshop in Nashville, is among the most popular in all of Nashville workshops. Marc Alan was telling me that he goes regularly, and it's very common to see some of Nashville's biggest writers attending the Luboff's workshop. They are so well respected that the heavy hitters use them as well! How cool is that? The November 3rd workshop will be $60 per person, which as always will include lunch and snacks. Everyone will get one critique, plus the teaching sessions stated above "Blockbuster Stories and Super Song Starters". All at Skip's Music, from 10am - 5pm on November 3rd. BE THERE!! Then on Sunday November 4th, Pete and Pat (together or separately) will be available for one-on-one sessions at our house. Please contact them directly at Pete and Pat will be available for one-on-one consultations on Sunday, November 4. Please email pluboff@writesongs.com by October 31 to schedule your appointment. I'm embarrassed to say that I can't find their rates, as I recall they're similar to Jason Blume, $60 for 1/2 an hour, and $100 for a full hour. You bring in your songs and lyric sheets, and go one on one with two of Nashville's most respected sets of ears. Contact them soon for a Sunday November 4th spot! Or let me know and I'll contact them myself....just do it!

It's late and I'm tired....so I'll wrap this up pretty quickly. I'd like to say a very sincere "Thank You" for all the kind words and wishes that have flowed our way. Let's keep plugging away with what we started here. We'll be throwing a party ourselves before we leave. It won't be a "good-bye" party, it will be a very sincere "look at what we've all done" party. A celebration of friendship and common bonds. Will let you know when and where. In closing I'm adding two attachments. One is a very well writen "funny" song that a neighbor friend sent to me. Please check it out at: http://denimandlace.50megs.com/1bigone.html (i hope that this link works.....if not, just google denim and lace big one) The second one is an amazing video of one of my all time favorite songs. It's funny and touching all at one time, it's attached at the top on this email. And a foot note to this.....look at how short the song is.....and what it says during it's whopping 2 minutes. Absolutely songwriting at it's best! A friend who knows me very well forwarded me this classic clip. That's all for now my friends. We're treading forward towards our new adventure, while embracing alot of great memories here in Sacramento. These crossroads are quite interesting...... Take Care,
